CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The cold arctic air remains in place over South Texas on this Tuesday morning as many of us are beginning with temperatures well below freezing in the teens and 20s.
This cold air is even more spine-chilling as many residents continue to contend with no power or running water. Add the wind, and there are many locations with wind chill temperatures in the single digits.
A Freeze Warning remains in place for the entire Coastal Bend until noon today and a Wind Chill Warning will expire at 10 a.m.
We’ll begin today with the frigid cold temperatures and mainly clear skies; however, as we progress through the afternoon the clouds will fill in and showers will begin to increase first along the coast and then move inland later this evening and overnight.
There will be a small window of opportunity to see some freezing rain once again for our northern counties. Given the precipitation that will be in place and some cold air still at the surface, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 7 p.m. this evening to 6 a.m. Wednesday for Live Oak and Bee counties. Accumulations are expected to stay low and it is not expected to be a widespread freezing rainfall event.
For the remainder of the region, rainfall totals will average around a quarter to half inch of some rainfall.
Those showers will all come in advance of the next cold front that will surge into the region by Wednesday afternoon. Highs on Wednesday will reach the low 50s, but as the front pushes in that will take many temperatures back to freezing levels by Thursday morning. Most of the rainfall will move out with a strong northerly wind around 15-25 mph, but it will reinforce the cold air once more.
On Friday morning, temperatures will start in the mid to low 20s for much of South Texas. Again, a bit of icing will be possible across the region.
Moving into the weekend, we’ll get return flow off the Gulf and a southeasterly wind will return and usher in much warmer air for the weekend. Highs will push back into the upper 60s to 70s with winds on the brisk side around 15-25 mph. The next front looks to arrive on Monday with a chance of showers, but that front is very weak in nature.
