CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A powerful winter storm plowed through the Lone Star State today, delivering a large swath the heavy snow from the Hill Country into East Texas while pounding the Coastal Bend with heavy rain and high winds.
The rain abated late in the day, but the wind and biting cold will linger through Monday. While snowfall totaled in excess of five inches over portions of Central and East Texas, rainfall exceeded three inches in coastal areas of Nueces and Kleberg Counties, prompting a flood advisory Sunday afternoon. Temperature plummeted from the upper 50s around noon to the lower 40s by 3 pm, with wind chill values in the middle 30s.
While skies clear by midday Monday the cold will last through Tuesday, with some inland areas near freezing both Monday and Tuesday mornings. The Polar air moves east by Thursday, soon to be followed by another cold front Thursday night. That system will not be as chilly as today's and will serve only to maintain temperatures just a bit below normal.
Highs will range from the lower 50s Monday and Tuesday to the upper 60s on Thursday. Lows will be from the middle 30s to middle 40s.
