NOTE: The Storm Surge map images attached to this story are for example purposes only. In the event of a storm impacting the Coastal Bend, maps regarding the effects of that storm would be released to warn residents.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, revised its flood zone map after Hurricane Ike hit the Texas coast in 2008. The storm surge reached areas of Galveston that took experts and residents by surprise.

The revised maps are now divided into zones based upon height above sea level. Each zone represents an area that will be flooded depending on the category of the hurricane. Zone one, for example, represents the areas that are the lowest in elevation and subject to flooding if hit by even the weakest hurricane.

Not only is knowing your flood zone important for insurance purposes, but it will give you an idea of what you can expect during a storm. Specifically, what preparations you need to take to secure your home and whether or not you should evacuate.
