It’s hard to believe that we’ve already reached the final week of the regular season for area Class 4A teams and below.
There are some huge games coming up this week, but none bigger than our marquee matchup between Calallen and Port Lavaca Calhoun for the district title on Friday night.
For the third straight year, the Wildcats and Sandcrabs will meet for the district title on the final Friday night of the regular season.
The Sandcrabs are known for their incredible wishbone offense which is putting up some electrifying numbers this year.
In just nine games, they have already amassed more than 3,000 yards on the ground for the top total in Texas.
So the big question is, how do you slow these guys down?
“If you assigned the pitchman, you better make sure you get the pitchman,” veteran Calallen coach Phil Danaher said. “Now I have the best defensive coordinator in the state, so he will have our defense ready to go."
Danaher is describing his long-time assistant Steve Campbell, who has developed top defenses for years for the Calallen program.
He has coached against Calhoun on many occasions and appears to have his players ready for their biggest challenge of the season on Friday.
“We have made a game plan where everybody has a certain guy and we all go our certain keys and stuff like that so we can shut down their offense,” Calallen inside linebacker William Burch said.
The challenge of containing the Sandcrabs’ potent ground attack will be a challenge, according to Calallen defensive back Justice McClure.
“Their running game is very disciplined and they all know their assignments, so our job is basically take every single one of their players and just latch on to them,” McClure said.
The game plan sounds simple enough. Execution will be the key as the Wildcats challenge the Sandcrabs again for the district title.
We, of course, will be there.
Expect this game to be one of our best marquee matchups of the season.
