It was a big night for high school football as a lot of Coastal Bend teams conducted scrimmages all over South Texas.
One of particular note Friday night was at Buc Stadium as the MIller Bucs hooked up with Ingleside.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, area schools are allowed to play just one scrimmage this year.
So teams have to make the most of their dress rehearsal.
This was an especially important scrimmage for the Mustangs because they have installed a new offense, the wing-T. And for the first time, they got a chance to run it against someone else.
"Anytime you go from any type of shotgun and back to under center - two and three years ago we were under center full time - so they have come up in it,” Ingleside coach Hunter Hamrick said. “It’s just transitioning back and that would be the slowest thing we have going right now. But that will pick up and I think we are better at doing simpler things right now.”
The Bucs, meanwhile, have been running the same offense for the past four years under Coach Justen Evans.
So it's just a matter of execution. And it showed on Miller’s first play when quarterback Andrew Body rifled a 70-yard touchdown pass. The Bucs looked like they are ready for opening night.
“By year four, the kids know the system and they know what is going on,” Evans said. “Our numbers are up which is great for the Miller program for freshmen all the way up to seniors. So we are really excited about the program and the direction it's headed in.”
Both of these teams will start their season on Friday. Ingleside travels to Odem and the Buccaneers will play host to Tuloso-Midway.
