Moody puts on a show in first week

Even though it’s Week Six of the high school football season, the Moody Trojans only played their first game of the season last week and they didn't show too much rust.

With very little Spring and offseason conditioning, and just one scrimmage under their belt, no one really knew what to expect from the Moody Trojans’ season opener last Thursday against Beeville.

Turns out they put on a quite a show, at times tricking not only the Beeville defense, but our Friday Night Fever cameras, too, en route to a 46-43 victory.

"Being our first game, our first outing and our conditioning, our kids fought through it,” said Trojans’ Head Football Coach Mike Cantu. “They were tired and exhausted, but they made no excuses. They never panicked, and persevered, and came out victorious."

This is a Moody football team that can beat opponents in so many ways, with a lot of ability up and down the roster, on both sides of the ball.

"Oh yeah, we have a lot of talent, especially in the backfield and at quarterback,” said Moody running back Nathaniel Sada. “We can do a lot, run, throw and really good special teams."

Cantu admits his team will continue to play catchup for several more weeks before they are 100-percent ready to go.

"We'll probably go between the third and fourth game, where you feel like your kids are conditioned, pad-shaped and doing all that,” he said. “But our kids have done a good job trying to get there, so we make no excuses about it. We have to play a lot of kids, and a lot of kids go both ways."

And no rest for the weary: The Trojans open district play Friday night against Gregory-Portland at Cabaniss Field, a game we will televise on our sister station KDF-TV starting at 7:30 p.m.
