COVID-19 in Rio Grande Valley causes problems for Ingleside football

With the season opener just 14 days away, the push is on for opening night.

Here at Ingleside, knowing which school it will play has been a challenge.

The Mustangs learned this week their new district, 16-4A Division II, has been split up into two zones because their Rio Grande Valley opponents have been forced to delay the start of their seasons due to an increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases.

So as it stands right now, Ingleside will play Rockport-Fulton, Sinton, West Oso and Robstown for three playoff spots.

"It's an unfortunate thing, I feel like, for everybody, and we are definitely on the better end of things,” said Ingleside Head Football Coach Hunter Hamrick. “But hopefully we'll be ready by the time we get to district. All things will work out the way they are supposed to, and potentially we play 10 games and the Valley is in a rough spot, getting two possibly, three, and at very best, four, games. Not all fair for everybody, but it is what it is at this point."

And during all this, the Mustangs are installing a offense.

They will be running the ball more as they go to the Wing T.

"I think it fits for our kids,” Hamrick said. “We got a couple of big kids up front coming, younger kids, and some kids who have been around a while. We built some younger kids coming up as a run-first type team, and we probably took to the air a little too much last year."

"My freshman year we came here, Coach Hamrick came here, and we all just jumped into it,” said wide receiver/defensive back Bobby Gonzales. “So it's a lot of refreshing for us.”

"I'm liking it, personally, and we are looking a lot better than last year's offense," said player Seth Ruff. You can to check out the new-look Mustangs on Aug. 28 when they travel to Odem to take on the Owls.
