Our Friday Night Fever preview tour continues in Beeville to check in on the Trojans, who are eager to try and repeat history this year

In Beeville, the Trojans are coming off their first-ever 10-0 regular season and district championship.

Now they must find a way to follow that up after graduating 23 seniors, and like most other teams in South Texas, they, too, have had their share of COVID-19 issues.

In fact, they had to shut down practice for three days last week.

"We wanted to make sure we were all on the same page, and it's better to be safe than sorry later on,” said Beeville Head Football Coach Chris Soza. “The administration came up with a plan we are going to use as a guidance from here on out, and that's kind of where we are at right now."

Soza said the barrage of novel coronavirus-related stoppages during the spring and summer have affected his players’ readiness for the coming season.

“It's been crazy,” he said. “It's hard when you have all these interruptions and things happening so we have to get them there slowly, and it's been hot, but I think we have time hopefully we stay healthy and get better every day.”

The Trojans are also playing in a brand-new district this year, joining former Class 5A schools Calallen, Miller, Port Lavaca and Tuloso-Midwway to form 15-4A Division I.

"It's super exciting,” said tight end/fullback A.D. Patton. “They have a lot of good athletes in that district and a lot of guys bringing in offers, that are committed, so the competition level is definitely up there in the state of Texas."

"I think we are really excited as a whole to be able to play during this pandemic and everything so it's been a blessing," said running back and defensive back Jalen Spicer.

The Trojans will scrimmage at Cuero on Thursday night before opening the regular season a week from Friday when they travel to Boerne.
