People Are Making BLTs With Strawberries Instead Of Tomatoes And We’re Strangely Intrigued

If you’ve hit that midday slump and are feeling hangry, you could do worse than the classic BLT. There’s the lightly toasted Italian bread slathered in mayo. The crisp leaves of lettuce. The juicy slices of tomato. And, most important of all, there’s the bacon, pan-fried to that perfect level of both crispy and chewy, which gives the sandwich it’s addictive salty, savory taste. (My stomach just straight-up growled while typing that sentence.)

But what if you don’t like tomatoes? Sure, it may seem impossible to have a BLT without the T. But some maniacs have suggested that there are other options.

Over at Food52, for example, they’re floating the idea of a BLT that contains strawberries instead of tomatoes! Gasp!

As they write in their Instagram post, this version of the BLT “swaps out one juicy, red fruit with another, only this one’s in season a couple months earlier. A savory sandwich with a sweet twist—not the other way around.”

What do you think? Is their food editor completely out of line, or does the idea of strawberries mingling with bacon and lettuce sound appealing?

Of course, they’re not the first foodies to suggest variations on this sandwich classic. The food blogger behind 300 Sandwiches, for example, is partial to bacon, lettuce and peach sandwiches — or, as they refer to it on their blog, the Bacon, Lettuce, and “I Hate Tomatoes” sandwich. On their Instagram feed, they write that it’s their favorite summer sandwich:

In fact, there are a ton of people who hate the T in the BLT, but who have plenty of suggestions for replacement ingredients, including avocado, peppers and cucumbers.

Others prefer to take the classic BLT ingredients and turn it into something new, as with this Baked BLT Dip recipe from the Betty Crocker website. Yum!
