In today's We're Open report, a downtown restaurant that cooks with love is highlighted.

Portis Kountry Kitchen & Catering can be found in the basement of the Wells Fargo Bank building at 615 N. Upper Broadway.

And when you eat at the restaurant, there's a good chance you'll be serenaded by the owner, Maurice Portis.

During a 34-year career as an educator, Portis worked as a principal and a band director for the West Oso ISD.

Now, he loves to cook up a delightful array of home-cooked meats, vegetables and desserts he likes to call soul food. His restaurant has been open for 17 years.

From chicken and dumplings, fried catfish and meat loaf to his decadent bean pie, Portis will make sure you leave contented after a great meal.

"Well, soul food mainly to describe it is food cooked with love," Portis said. "You know, we cook a lot of things from scratch and it's done with love."
