A local mattress is company is celebrating 100 years of service by doing what they do best.
So it’s no surprise that the folks at Cantwell Mattress Co., 4316 SPID, are open and serving all of us during the pandemic.
"We are super excited about it, handcrafting and building mattresses for 100 years,” Cantwell owner Curtis Cantwell Jr. said. “One family, five generations, it's just been fabulous, and we have been blessed."
Curtis' great grandfather Bob Cantwell founded the business back in 1920 in Brady, Texas.
Sixteen years later, Cantwell Mattress settled in Corpus Christi. Here is one of the original locations on Staples Street from 1936.
The business would later would be handed down to Bob Cantwell Jr. And then Curtis Cantwell and now Curtis Cantwell Jr.
It’s been a great run for the family here in the Coastal Bend.
“Corpus Christi stands for the body of Christ and it has bestowed that upon us and made us what we are today” Cantwell said. “And why we are still here is because of the community of Corpus Christi."
And that is why Cantwell Mattress loves to give back by donating to various charities.
Here at their factory on Baldwin where they make all their mattresses,Curtis and his staff are building mattresses for the Kingsville Fire Department and will deliver 13 free mattresses to them this coming Tuesday
"They reached out to us to get a bid and I got to thinking you know what, if they need mattresses right now, these guys are on the front line and they are the essential of the essential workers and they need a good night's sleep and I am not going to let them wait until the city figures out their budget,” Cantwell said. “So we decided, you know what, we are going to give it to you guys."
So, as they celebrate 100 years in business, the Cantwell’s aren’t going anywhere. They are looking forward to another 100 successful years.
"Because almost everybody in Corpus Christi knows the slogan “You can’t well sleep without a Cantwell mattress,” Cantwell said.
