Governor Greg Abbott announced in a press release Thursday afternoon that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission will provide around $204 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program food benefits for January.
This is part of the state’s COVID-19 response. Additionally, there will also be a 15 percent increase in benefits for all benefit holders thanks to recent federal legislation that passed.
The 15 percent increase will start in January and continue until June 2021. The increased benefits should appear in recipient accounts by Jan. 23.
"Thank you to the U.S. Department of Agriculture for extending these benefits and increasing the amount of benefits that Texas families will receive," said Governor Abbott in the release. "These emergency SNAP benefits continue to help put food on the table for many Texas families throughout the COVID-19 pandemic."
