LONGVIEW, Texas — The circumstances surrounding a case of animal cruelty is shocking animal lovers in East Texas.
According to the Longview Police Department, police responded Friday morning to a gruesome scene where six puppies were found dead, frozen inside a locked wire crate.
"This is a reminder that temperatures will be brutally freezing this week. Animals do not need to suffer in the cold. If at all possible, bring your animals inside your house where it is warm," said a post from the department.
Investigators said the puppies were approximately five weeks old.
Longview Animal Services said two adult dogs, one female and one male, were taken to Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center for treatment.
Animal cruelty charges are being filed on the owner of the animals with the Gregg County District Attorney’s Office.
An arrest was not made at this time due to pending necropsy results.
Investigators said animal cruelty is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail, a fine of up to $4,000, or both jail time and a fine.
