CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Rockport-Fulton community continues Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts-the middle school included. Two years after Hurricane Harvey hit, the Rockport-Fulton Middle School still needs to replace several band hall assets that were damaged by the storm.
On Tuesday, the Downtown Local Merchants helped the band do that through a donation of $4,566. The band director was presented with the check during the school's first pep rally of the year. The money will be used to buy 45 chairs, two racks to hold the chairs and instruments. The band hall itself sustained severe damage during the storm. Moisture leaking through the roof caused the destruction of lots of the equipment in the band hall. The school was able to repair the structure but still lacked the funding to replace the smaller items like the chairs and instruments.
Several students at the pep rally said they are happy knowing they will get to play the instrument they really want and sit in chairs that are not "beat up."
The school principal held back tears when asked what the donation means to her.
"It let's me know that fine arts (pauses), I'm going to get emotional, It lets me know that fine arts is important to this community they want to help out the band."
Currently, the school has 690 students enrolled. That's about a hundred less than before the hurricane hit two years ago.
