Garcia Elementary School is kicking off Red Ribbon Week.
It's part of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness for drug prevention in local communities.
Today, CCISD invited officers from the Corpus Christi Police Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the Coast Guard to speak with students at Garcia Elementary. They intend to educate them on different types of law enforcement agencies and the dangerous impacts of drugs in youth.
“It's never too early to educate them on the dangers of drugs and what they do to your body, your mind, your health,” school counselor Danette Vargas, school counselor said. “So that they can understand that these officers are here to help them,”
The campaign started in 1985 after the murder of a DEA agent Enrique Camarena.
In honor of Camarena, communities across the country used the red ribbons as a symbol to their commitment to raise awareness for the negative impacts of drugs.
