CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A couple of police horses were killed on Wednesday night in San Patricio County.

The incident was precipitated by a search for a driver who fled from DPS troopers during a traffic stop. This started around 7 p.m. north of Mathis. Sheriff's deputies and Texas Parks and Wildlife agents were also assisting in the search. According to San Patricio County Sheriff Oscar Rivera, a search team of dogs and horses were also deployed in the search on T359 north of Mathis.

The horses were able to get loose from their trailer and wandered into the road. A Ford Mustang then struck the horses killing them. The car also sustained major damage and the driver was injured. No other injuries were reported.

Officers continue to search for the driver who led them on a chase.
