CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Roy Miller Buccaneers football team are breaking barriers academically.
Their head coach says the players have an overall team academic GPA of 3.4!
The Battlin' Buc's team players say studying and staying on top of their grades is something they take very seriously while keeping a positive mindset because others are watching.
“Keep my head up because I know people are like looking up to us so we have to keep a good mindset and if we do good they do good,” says varsity player Jayshawn Trimble.
Miller High Head Coach Justen Evans says the players put in so much hard work in their off-season from workouts to staying focused in the classroom.
Coach Evans also says first and foremost they are not only great athletes, but they are great students.
Evans says eventually the season will come to an end, and although they'll have their memories, it's what they learned in the classroom that will stay with them.
“That's the most important thing, for us that's the stat we look at you know, is the GPA's you know because that's what they're going to need to carry on with them past high school past you know playing football what have you, because football is going to end one day and so the academics success that they're having is going to carry them long past their years after high school,
Players say their families are proud of them as well for being able to balance life in the classroom and on the field.
