CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — LULAC Para Todos, a chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens, demanded an apology from rapper DaBaby for homophobic remarkshe made during a performance last week. DaBaby took to social media to apologize on Monday.
The rapper's apology comes amid festivals dropping him and backlash from Madonna, Elton John, and a slew of pro-LGBTQ+ groups, according to the local LULAC chapter.
DaBaby posted his apology on Instagram and took a swing at cancel culture.
"Social media moves so fast that people want to demolish you before you even have the opportunity to grow, educate, and learn from your mistakes. As a man who has had to make his own way from very difficult circumstances, having people I know publicly working against me — knowing that what I needed was education on these topics and guidance — has been challenging," he wrote. "I appreciate the many people who came to me with kindness, who reached out to me privately to offer wisdom, education, and resources. That's what I needed and it was received. I want to apologize to the LGBTQ+ community for the hurtful and triggering comments I made ... I know education on this is important. Love to all."
Before the Instagram post, the local chapter of LULAC Para Todos condemned the rapper's comments and called for an apology.
"LULAC Para Todos joins the chorus of voices pushing back against DaBaby's hate-filled words," said Matt Stacy Stevens, a board member for the organization. "We want him to know that hate has no place here in our bend of the coast."
The chapter's attempts to contact the rapper's manager Arnold Taylor and his record label, South Coast Music Group, remain unanswered.
DaBaby performed at the Old Concrete Street Amphitheater in Corpus Christi on Saturday night.
