Gov. Greg Abbott is planning to visit Corpus Christi next week.
The governor will be meeting with city officials to learn about the execution and implementation of the "Saving our Seniors" COVID-19 home vaccination program, said Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo.
Guajardo said the governor's office was interested in the culling of data for the SOS program from the city's homebound program, and that is among the topics to be discussed next week.
The Tuesday visit includes a stop at the Corpus Christi Fire Station #18 on the 6200 block of Ayers Street. A full itinerary is forthcoming, as long as inclement weather doesn't impact plans, Guajardo said.
On Jan. 25, the Corpus Christi Fire Department began administering COVID-19 vaccinations to homebound elderly who are part of the City’s Meals on Wheels program.
Corpus Christi was the first in the state to administer the vaccine to these vulnerable patients.
First responders provided between 80 to 100 vaccinations per day until the vaccines ran out. As of Friday, February 12, the city had vaccinated nearly 2,000 homebound residents, Guajardo said.
Corpus Christi Fire Chief Robert Rocha said Austin and Victoria are now doing the same.
"It seems to be a model for our Texas cities as we’ve received calls from other cities and calls about how we are implementing it," Guajardo added.
