Firefighters put out fire inside old Cunningham Middle School

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The quick actions of local firefighters is being credited for stopping an old CCISD middle school from burning down.

Firefighters said they were called after people saw heavy smoke coming from the old Cunningham Middle School in the 4300 block of Prescott Street on Wednesday night.

Firefighters were met with large plumes of black smoke pouring out of the back of the building, according to fire investigators.

Additional firefighters were called in as crews discovered the source of the fire and put it out.

It turns out an air-conditioning unit caught fire, caused heavy smoke damage to one room.

Firefighters said the room was used for storing away old files and paperwork, which caught fire and produced the heavy smoke.

It took firefighters 5 minutes to put out the fire.
