CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The City of Corpus Christi has seven day-time warming shelters available for people to use to get out of the cold. The shelters are open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. through Wednesday, Feb. 17.

The locations are: Broadmoor Senior Center, 1651 Tarlton St.; Ethel Eyerly Senior Center, 654 Graham Rd.; Garden Senior Center, 5325 Greely Dr.; Oveal Williams Senior Center, 1414 Martin Luther King Dr.; Ben F. McDonald Public Library, 4044 Greenwood Dr.; La Retama Central Library, 805 Comanche St.; and Owen R. Hopkins Public Library, 3202 McKinzie Rd.

On Saturday, many warming shelters did not see many patrons using the facilities. The Hopkins Public Library, located in Annaville, was the only one to report a significant amount of people over the course of the day.

Stephanie Juarez, the Emerging Technology Librarian at La Retama Central Library, said they are happy to be able to provide these services to people in need.

“We believe the locations that were picked are good central locations for resources, so if you need a warming place, just come into the library, and we’ll be happy to provide you with a warm place. As a library, we’re here for the community. So, whatever the community needs are, we’re here to help,” she said.

Space in overnight shelters is limited in the city, but starting Saturday, the city opened a short-term shelter open 24/7 for the duration of the cold weather event. It is located at the American Bank Center.
