CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi police say they have arrested a man who allegedly stole a police vehicle early Wednesday morning.

The incident happened just before 5 a.m. Wednesday in the 1600 Agnes near the Crosstown Expressway.

Investigators stated an officer stopped to assist two people as they attempted to push their vehicle out of the road. The officer placed his vehicle behind the stalled car so that they would have a barrier between them and any possible traffic according to police.

As the officer was occupied helping the motorist, a male got into a marked police car and attempted to drive off.

Investigators said the officer ran to his vehicle and attempted to turn off the vehicle as he struggled with the suspect.

The officer was dragged for 40 to 50 feet. The officer sustained non-life threatening injuries. The suspect crashed the police car into a light pole and then fled the scene.

Detectives were able secure photos of the suspect, who is identified as Luis Chavarria, 26.
