CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Texas heat is no joke and people need to make sure they are taking the proper precautions when doing any type of activity outside.

Staff with AEP Texas share that there's a way to make sure you stay cool while conserving energy at the same time.

The heatwaves can get overwhelming in South Texas.

Workers with AEP say a great thing to do is to consider smart energy consumption.

To help you save a few bucks, AEP Texas says in your home find a temperature that is comfortable in your household and leave it there.

“You know a lot of people think turning it up then turning it down maybe using the air conditioner different times of the day is helpful but the truth is having a consistent temperature in your home is going to make the biggest difference when it comes to managing your energy consumption,” says Omar Lopez.

Another tip is to unplug appliances and other items you do not use regularly.

Also, AEP says turn off your lights and close your drapes because that blocks thermal energy and it will help your home stay cooler.

AEP says ceiling fans can also be very beneficial.

“I really think ceiling fans are the unsung hero of temperature control when you have ceiling fans on in your home, it really does help create a consistent temperature and maybe an even cooler temperature once the outside heat is kept outside,” says Lopez.
