CR-36-BRIDGE

A bridge closure has Robstown taxpayers frustrated, saying its a big inconvenience.  The small bridge located between the Martin Marietta Material Yard and the Flat-Iron Dragados Construction Yard has been closed for almost a month.  Homeowners on County Road 36 have to take a detour to gain access to Highway 44.

Robstown city officials say the Texas Department of Transportation ordered them to close the bridge because of concerns of failure due to wear and tear from heavy trucks.  The City is working with the Nueces County Drainage District and both businesses on County Road 36 to find cost-effective solutions.

“When you’re working with less and trying to create more, you have to get innovative and creative so that you can solve it within your means,” said Herman Rodriguez, Robstown City Manager.

A new bridge will cost between $300,000 and $400,000.  The City says it doesn’t have that in their budget.

City leaders say negotiations are underway for the County Drainage District to demolish the bridge.  Flat-Iron Dragados will donate concrete for the new structure.

No word on a start date or timeline for the project.
