New law prohibits sale of tobacco to anyone under 21 in Texas

The State of Texas has raised the legal age for buying cigarettes.  Governor Greg Abbott signed the bill into law Friday.

Starting September 1st, anyone under the age of 21 will no longer be able to buy cigarettes, e-cigarettes or other tobacco products in the state.  Persons in the military are excluded.  Anyone caught breaking the new law will face a Class C Misdemeanor and a fine of up to $500.  Those pushing the law to increase the minimum age by three years say it should reduce the risk of addiction.
