“13,000 people for the Memorial Day weekend,” said President and CEO of the Texas State Aquarium, Tom Schmid.

And that’s just as the Aquarium kicks off the unofficial start of summer.

“A lot of folks are here they’re traveling and it’s just an opportunity to allow more people to come and experience everything we have,” said Schmid.

From now until Labor Day weekend, the aquarium is offering extended hours, opening at 10 AM and closing at 6 o’clock every evening.

Additionally, to kick off the summer Schmid says they’ve brought in a brand new 4D film.

“We have more programming during the summer,” said Schmid. “We’ve got some additional bird and marine mammal shows and of course the splash park will be up and running all summer long.”

Schmid says he expects to see the attendance rate continue to rise, and thanks to a recent expansion, the facility can now house more people than ever

“Previously when we had 4,000-5000 people here in one day it felt a little congested but with the Caribbean Journey we’ve more than doubled the size of the aquarium,” said Schmid. “We’ve got a lot more space for folks to enjoy the exhibits and it’s just not as congested.”
