New sensory classroom helps autistic students learn

Posted

A Robstown Elementary School just finished a new addition that caters toward kids with autism.  Robert Driscoll Elementary School now has a sensory room.

The classroom is specially designed to create a unique learning environment.  It has bubble columns and a sensory wall.  And one side of the classroom looks like an indoor playground.  One parent says it’s already making a difference in her daughter’s life.

“It’s done wonders for her… She loves sensory rooms so I’m so excited,” said Sonia Marines, parent of autistic student.  She adds, “Being in a regular classroom, sometimes there’s things that kind of distract her that might not distract another child.”

This pilot program was funded through a grant from the Texas Education Agency.  It’s been renewed for another year to help the Robstown school district with classroom resources.
