It’s been two years since Refugio Junior High and High School teams have had access to their own gyms.

Both were devastated by Hurricane Harvey.

Coaches and students who relied on the gyms have had to travel to Taft or Woodsboro ISD just to practice.

Harvey destroyed parts of the high school as well.

Although the rebuilding process is underway, it’s been difficult and time-consuming.

With progress being made the school district is beginning to see an end in sight.

“We’re without so much, but you wouldn’t know it looking at our kids and looking at our results,” said Jason Herring, athletic director at Refugio High School.

School officials are thrilled at the return of the gyms.

“We’re excited for our students not to be on the road and not have to have the danger of traveling,” said Refugio Superintendent Melissa Gonzales.

Both gyms are expected to be completed by the end of August.

Repairs at the high school should be completed by the end of this month.
