UPDATE: Port Aransas police chief Scott Burroughs said the body of a man was found in the truck about 2 p.m.
Police believe they know the identity of the subject, but are awaiting notification of next of kin before they release his name.
A man driving a truck led Port Aransas Police on a chase last night that ended with the truck plunging into the ship channel.
Corpus Christi Police Department divers are in the water right now trying to bring that truck and its driver up.
According to the Port Aransas PD, the truck drove into the water after leading police on a chase through town.
At about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, police got a report of a suspicious pickup on North Aleister.
When police approached the truck, the driver sped off, almost hitting an officer.
The chase led to the ferry landing where the driver made several loops before crashing through a barrier arm and into the water.
“During the immediate aftermath the ferry shut down operations for a couple of hours until we were able to locate the vehicle,” Port Aransas Police Department Chief Scott Burroughs said. “We wanted to make sure there wasn’t a collision possibility with the vehicle and a ferry.”
The ferry is open now, but with limited lanes.
Divers are trying to float the truck to the surface and will move it to the far end of the landing.
Once it’s up, police will start the recovery process for the driver, who police believe is still in the truck.
Police have not released any information on the identity of the driver.
They also do not know if the truck was stolen.
