London High School has 18 students just as serious about rocketry as anyone at NASA.
These students and their instructor will be traveling to Stone Wall, near Fredericksburg on May 4, to put their rocketry skills to the test.
One team’s project calls for them to launch a payload to an altitude of one mile.
The second team has a much more ambitious mission, to fly faster than 717 mph and break the sound barrier. To the young scientists, this is better known as breaking Mach 1.
“I can’t wait to see both rockets go up. I mean, it’s just such a big accomplishment,” the team’s instructor Toni Castle said. “This year’s a much bigger team than last year. And so to see them work together, and see all the little parts come together, it’s a much bigger feat.”
These students are enrolled in a program called SystemsGo. It teaches them skills that could lead to a career in the space industry.
Last year three students from this class were able to present their rocket designs to professionals at NASA.
