Plans to expand part of IH 37 are in the works.  The Texas Department of Transportation plans to make IH 37 from the Redbird Lane exit to the US-77 Interchange four lanes each way.  They hope this will help ease traffic.

The plan also includes a new Nueces River Bridge.  As several lanes converge at the bridge, they also hope this will make travel safer in that area.

“What we’re doing is what’s called lane balancing,” said Rick Dailey, TxDOT Public Informations Officer, “You have several lanes coming in on 77 and others coming in on 37 and the kinda neck down to three lanes over the Nueces River Bridge. What we’re going to do is put an extra travel lane on the bridge so you’ll have travel lanes.”

Plus the new bridge will be higher to help prevent flooding.  The project is almost through the preliminary design phase.  TxDOT hopes to start construction in the fall.  The work will take between 2 and 2 1/2 years to finish.
