Fiesta de la Flor

Fiesta de la Flor 2019 is finally upon us. Thousands of people from all over are already gathering as Corpus Christi celebrates the legacy of our own Queen of Cumbia, Selena.

Security preparations have been underway for this year’s festival, that is already proving to be bigger and better than ever

The musical line-up is enough to get people on the dance floor. Today you can see fantastic musical artists such as Leslie Grace, Jay Perez, Mariachi Campanas de America, Erick y Su Grupo Massore, Jenny and the Mexicats, Raulito con Grupo Remedio, Lucky Joe, and JonMikael Mrez.

Make sure you come hungry. Outside food and drinks are not allowed but there will be an entire lot of more than 20 food trucks parked just outside the American Bank Center.

Like any good festival, there is akids zone filled with games and activities for youngins, and aplace to shop with over 80 artisans from Mexico, Central America, South America, and here in the United States.

For all the low-rider enthusiasts, there will be aTejano Lowrider Extravaganza showcasing some super fancy classic vehicles.

There will also be a showing ofSelena’s last live concert in the American Bank Center auditorium.

As far as transportation, park-and-ride services will be available to and from the site.

Wings Over South Texas Air Show

The Wings Over South Texas Air Show is coming back to Naval Air Station Corpus Christi for another fun-filled weekend.

With the headliners, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels taking on the skies over Corpus Christi, the 5-plane demonstration squadron, along with Fat Albert travel the country to 61 different Air Shows to show off the excellence and professionalism that make up the U.S. Navy and the United States Marine Corps.

5th Annual Wooden Boat Festival in Port Aransas

Watercraft from across the state and beyond will be on display this weekend at the 5th Annual Wooden Boat Festival in Port Aransas.

This yearly effort is put together by the Port Aransas Museum and Farley Boat Works – both under the umbrella of the Port Aransas Preservation and Historical Association.

Organizers are expecting between 30 and 50 boats to be on display at Roberts Point Park (301 JC Barr Blvd.) and the Farley Boat Works (716 W. Ave. C) by both kit companies and individual builders and designers. It is an opportunity for those who attend to see beautifully handcrafted and commercially-built boats and to speak with the people who created them.

Anyone who would like to display their wooden boat is invited to do so, at no cost. It does not have to be pretty or even finished – just made of wood!

The fun began on Friday when four families will began building boats. The construction will continue throughout the event, and the boats will launch Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Harbor Boat Ramp.

Tickets are $10 per person.

On Saturday, several short classes and demonstrations will take place between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. There will also be activities for children, a Nautical Flea Market and more.

Windfest 2019

If you love music and good food, you are in luck. It’s time for the annual Windfest Festival in Portland.

Windfest, Portland’s largest annual event, is back. The three-day festival features live music, carnival rides, games, a marketplace, parade, chili, beans and rib cook off, horseshoe tournament, washer tournament, Dachshund Dash & “All Dog” Costume Parade, and children’s activities.

Windfest 2019 is being held on April 12-14 at Portland Community Center, 2000 Billy G. Webb Drive in Portland.

The 46 annual festival that was originally called “Portland Frontier Festival” then renamed “Portland WindFest”, will feature last season’s winner of NBC’s talent show “The Voice,” Sundance Head, who will headline Friday night, April 12.

Also performing are Jagertown, Cristina Amaro Selena Tribute and Earth to Mars, a Bruno Mars tribute band.

Comedian Steve Trevino will emcee the three-day event, with proceeds from this historic festival going towards helping area non-profit organizations.

Robstown Mariachi Festival

Along with loads of fun, this festival will include a record attempt for most simultaneous mariachis performing.

Last year Robstown High School reportedly broke a Guinness world record in Mariachi during the annual El Cotton Picker Mariachi Festival.

Close to 800 musicians from across the state gathered at the festival and performed simultaneously.

Robstown High School Band and Mariachi Director Charles Cabrera, who wanted to bring recognition to the state of Texas and his Mariachi program, says their record was unofficial since they did not videotape all the student performers entering the gym.

The current record of 700 mariachis performing simultaneously was achieved during the 20th-annual Encuentro Internacional del Mariachi y la Charrería in Guadalajara, Mexico, on Sept. 5, 2013.

Cabrera and his students will try once again this weekend to make history. In order to break the record, everyone needed to be in their full mariachi outfit, sombreros included.

Just showing up is not all it will take to break the record; all participating musicians must be in full mariachi garb — trajes and sombreros.

The sombrero stipulation stumped a group in Alice when they tried to break the record a few years ago when they did not have enough sombreros.

Organizers are in the process of submitting the paperwork and getting the record verified.

1. All K-12 schools (private or public) or academies students can participate

2. University/college students and Professional mariachi musicians

3. Participants must play an instrument

4. Participants must be in full Mariachi attire including sombrero (can be borrowed or personal). We will have extra sombreros on hand.

5. Must register on the day of the event

6. No age limit and partial or complete groups welcomed

7. Must have a wristband to enter world record attempt.

Beeping Easter Egg Hunt for visually impaired children

The event, sponsored by the South Texas Lighthouse for the Blind and the Corpus Christi Police Departement Bomb, will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 13 at Whataburger Field.

It’s a special Easter Egg hunt for children who are blind or visually impaired and their family members on the Saturday prior to Easter weekend.

Thanks to the CCPD Bomb Squad, 200 large, brightly colored Easter eggs that beep will be present so that the participants can hunt for the eggs using their sense of hearing, rather than sight.

Additionally, other activities will include a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, moonwalks, crafts and much, much more.

Maclovio Perez met with Alana Manrow and Matt Weischwill to discuss the upcoming Beeping Eggstravaganza for the Blind.

All proceeds from Beeping Eggstravaganza go straight to the event, ensuring that deserving families receive a very unique and memorable experience at no cost to them.
