This time last year, Rockport High School didn’t even have a robotics time. Now it does, and they’re competing in the state tournament in Austin on Friday.

“It’s our first year and I’m surprised we’re going to state this year,” team member Vrunda Patel said.

Patel is joined by Laura Lee Dafft and Emma Jungman on their school’s first ever robotics team. That makes it an all-girl team which Coach Jed Wilshire says shouldn’t surprise anyone.

“It’s just finally putting to bed that myth that girls are not as talented in math and science,” Wilshire, a Rockport High School teacher said. “That’s just absolutely untrue.”

Regardless of their gender, Wilshire says the girls are making an impact at school for their devotion to the team and their team’s early success.

“They’re inspiring other people, both boys and girls,” Wilshire said. “I’m really proud of them.”

He’ll be even more proud if they bring home a state title. It’s a prize the girls have their eyes on.

“Hopefully,” Jungman said when asked if they can win. “That’s the goal.”
