Concern for our public schools has prompted local teachers, students and parents to seek help from state lawmakers in Austin.

More than 50 people representing the Corpus Christi Community Council of PTAs (CCCC of PTAs) left for Austin this morning for Rally Day at the State Capitol for PTAs and other parent groups. They will join others across the state in voicing their concerns on issues like school safety.

Their main focus? Public school funding.

“Right now, only about $8,500 is coming from the state for each student and the national average is $12,000, so we’re definitely pushing for better funding for our students,” Christina Harrison, President of CCCC of PTAs, said.

Another hot topic will be the increase use of vaping among teenagers. Legislation is expected to be discussed that will raise the age of legal tobacco use to 21.
