A 19-year old man is facing charges after he told officers he left a toddler in the backseat of a car while going into a store. That car was then stolen with the child still inside, according to officers.
Police responded to a call at a convenience store at the 2900 block of Norton Street just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
When officers arrived, Sam Severo Moreno, 19, told police he left the vehicle on with the toddler inside while he went into a convenience store. Moreno called police when someone jumped into the vehicle and escaped with it.
Officers found the vehicle with the child still inside near a local school. Officers say the 14-year-old suspect abandoned the vehicle, but was later found. He is being charged with aggravated kidnapping and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
The child was unharmed, according to police. Moreno faces charges of child abandonment and endangering a child. He was taken to jail.
