ROCKPORT – Rockport residents are raising money to reinstall their unofficial mascot at their beach entrance.  Many say the Blue Crab was a popular landmark amongst locals and tourists.

“It’s a great photo op for tourists and locals… You can see it from just about anywhere on the highway,” said Rockport resident, Bobby Jackson.

The 25-foot wide and 27-foot deep statue was originally installed at the Rockport beach entrance in 1957.  Six years later, it was removed after deterioration was detected.  Thirty years later, in 2012, residents decided to redesign and rebuild their iconic statue, however, the structure didn’t last long.  Hurricane Harvey took it down in 2017.

The “Keep Aransas County Beautiful” organization is leading the fundraising efforts.  So far they’ve raised $24,000 but need $80,000 to construct a new Blue Crab statue.
