CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Nueces County Medical Examiner's office has identified the victim of the deadly stabbing of the recent Vestal homicide.
The victim was Maria Diaz, 95. Her cause of death was multiple stab wounds to the chest, the medical examiner said.
A 33-year-old man charged with the homicide remains in jail under bonds totaling $1.5 million in connection with Diaz's death.
Jonathan Avery remains in Nueces County Jail after being charged with murder and aggravated assault charges.
Corpus Christi police report that Diaz was stabbed Feb. 14 in the 4500 block of Vestal.
A 65-year-old woman also involved was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuires in the incident.
Avery was arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Avery was arrested on scene and transported to the main station to be interviewed by Detectives. Avery was later transported to the City Detention Center to be processed.
Police say this was not a random act of violence and the parties involved were known to each other.
The incident occurred around 1:18 p.m. on Sunday.
When police arrived, they located a 33-year-old man outside the residence, and they immediately took him into custody. Police found two women with stabbing wounds when they entered the home. Both women were transported to a local hospital.
