CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Members of the NAACP partnered with the Christus Spohn Health System with free COVID-19 testing Saturday.
The two organizations are stressing the importance of keeping a healthy and safe community.
"We just want to bring awareness,” local NAACP president Terry Mills said.
Lines of several cars and trucks stretched across the American Bank Center parking lot awaiting their tests. Many members of the community took the initiative when fighting against the ongoing pandemic.
Mills says the free testing event site is designed to help Corpus Christi's COVID-19 numbers decline.
“If you come here, you keep that $100," Mills said. "Merry Christmas and you know one way or another I think that is awesome and the good thing about this is you will have your results in 36 to 48 hours or less."
Also working together was State Rep. Terry Canales (D-Edinburg), who said that families across South Texas need to continue to take preventative measures against COVID-19 and stay healthy.
“We also know that we are on the cusp of beating this thing and so making sure our elderly, our vulnerable, our children, everybody at large needs to understand that we are not out of the woods yet,” Canales said.
Visitors also received a bag of information on what to do if their COVID-19 results come back positive, along with items designed to boost their immune system.
