CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As 24-year-old nursing student Jasmine Estelle stood in the Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds on Monday, all she could focus on was the line of cars pulling up next to her, and the next arm she would swab and inject with the syringe of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in her hand.
She wasn't expecting any of those arms to belong to someone she knew, much less loves.
She was surprised as her 72-year-old grandmother, Germania Hoska, pulled up beside her, one of the thousands needing to be vaccinated that day.
She reassured her grandmother the shot wouldn't hurt as she began to inject the vaccine.
"It's OK, Lela," she said quietly.
After receiving her dose, Hosking, who moved to Corpus Christi from Puerto Rico in 1979, was overcome with emotion.
"Ay mi baby!" she said, blowing her air kisses through her mask and Jasmine's faceguard and mask.

Jasmine is in her final year of nursing school at TAMUCC.
