CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Fifty families in town will receive Thanksgiving meals thanks to Waitr, the online food delivery app. Waitr launched their five week Share Thanksgiving Food Drive campaign at the end of October.
Those who used the app during that time frame contributed to the cause allowing Waitr to partner with local restaurants and receive Thanksgiving-themed meals for families in need.
According to Waitr -- it's a special delivery in every sense of the word.
"This is the the second year we've done it in this market," Scott Goldman, Waitr market manager Corpus Christi said. "And the third year we've done it as a company. We are looking to feed 4,000 families total across the south."
During a five week period, Waitr set aside a portion of all its orders to help fund the initiative.
"The residents really do appreciate it," Melissa Juarez, executive director of Corpus Christi Hope House said.
Here in town, Waitr partnered with Good-N-Crisp Chicken on Padre Island and Crawdaddy's downtown.
"It just feels good to help out. It's the holiday season and it feels good to give back," Goldman said.
Waitr took nominations from each community and worked with local organizations to identify families in need.
Today's deliveries including 10 meals to a women's shelter who didn't know they were receiving them.
"When something like this happens it's very exciting for them," Juarez said. "They appreciate it very much because that's one check that they get to mark off...'okay, we can feed our kids and do other things that we have to do.'"
Waitr says the program wouldn't be possible without these restaurants that also understand that many people struggle to put food on the table.
Waitr said seeing their combined efforts come to fruition is very gratifying.
