CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Covering genres from tejano, disco, to conjunto music across the country, Shevi Love, has carried her career all the way to the Tejano Music Awards.
“Just the fact that I know I’m going to be up there on the big screen and people are going to be hoping that we won its just exciting,” said Love.
Love put out her first solo album ‘EP1: Shevi Love’ in 2018, and this year was industry nominated for the 'Best New Female Artist' of 2019.
But behind the curtain, what many don't know is that Shevi constantly battles for her life.
“They discovered that I had Thymoma cancer which is cancer of the Thymus gland and some of the immune system,” said Love.
Aside from her cancer, Love had a softball-sized tumor embedded right behind her sternum.
“The tumor shrunk, they removed it they removed the sack around my heart they removed half of my lung and I was wired up my sternum and I went in for immediate radiation,” said Love.
The doctors gave Love a five to eight-year lifespan. But this month, she will have outlived that timeline.
She's not cancer free yet and she says there are plenty of times where she can barely get out of bed; much less go on stage and perform.
“So now I live with constant pain in my chest and I can feel it shift, I can’t go swimming I can’t give big hugs I can’t do a lot of things,” said Love. “Especially being on stage moving around by the end of the afternoon I’m in so much pain.”
But she doesn't believe she's gotten this far, to give up now.
As of right now there are 12 female nominees in her category and if she makes the top 5, Love plans to attend the Tejano Music Awards in San Antonio this November.
“As long as Shevi Love can walk and talk I’m at full force 100 percent,” said Love.
