CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — While people are trying to honor and help out first responders, the Corpus Christi Fire Department is turning the tables.
Instead, they’re showing their generosity by helping others while off duty.
The Corpus Christi FIre Department stays busy putting out fires and responding to health emergencies. Tuesday, firefighters took time to respond to a different kind of call. A crew transported important items in one of their units to the Coastal Bend Food Bank.
“They cleaned out their lockers, bring stuff from home,” said Battalion Chief Tony Perez. “We filled up a fire truck, and we filled the bed of a pick up truck.”
The first responders formed a human assembly line and unloaded nearly 1,000 pounds of food to the Coastal Bend Food Bank.
“As hard as food is to get right now we think that its was a good idea,” said Perez. “You may not be suffering or be short on food but there are people out there that are.”
Perez says people from all over have offered the fire fighters cooked meals, donations and more. And, now the fire fighters are returning the favor.
“They understand the pressure that we are under to be there at the right time,” said Bea Hanson, Executive Director of the Coastal Bend Food Bank.
Hanson says the food bank has been working around the clock to make food runs, food drops, and food donations to people suffering from the impacts of the coronavirus. She says the food donated by the CCFD is going straight to the homes of South Texans.
“If you have a pantry and there’s stuff that your kids don’t like or you’re not gonna eat it then bring it here maybe someone else will eat it,” said Perez.
In total 926 pounds of dry, canned, and frozen food were donated by the local fire department.
