Everyone likes free stuff. So, how about a free education.

Del Mar College is now offering a free 10-week carpentry training program, for anyone 18 years old and up.

“They’ll be helping frame homes, roof houses, and apartment complexes,” said Dr. Leonard Rivera, Dean of the Continuing Education program.

He says the goal is to get students qualified to go into the work force and help rebuild South Texas after hurricane Harvey.

“It was two years ago but there’s still rebuilding going on as we speak,” said Rivera.

Free tuition will include the tools, equipment, and the protective gear students will need for the class, so Rivera says if you’re interested you just have to bring yourself.

The courses won’t just take place here in Corpus Christi, they’ll be available in Rockport, Refugio, Ingleside and Sinton.

And at the end of the program, students will build a ‘mini house’ as their final project; to prove they can frame a home, roof a home, put doors on it, and install the flooring.

“The mini house is a culmination of all these skills that these students will have learned or gained through the previous nine weeks,” said Rivera.

After they’ve completed the 10-week course, Rivera says he hopes all the students will be well suited for jobs in the carpentry industry.

“They will earn their OSHA 30 card which is invaluable in any kind of industrial setting and after they complete the program we actually help place them in a job,” said Rivera.

The free courses are able to be offered free after Del Mar College received an $800,000 grant from the Rebuild Texas Fund.

The classes will be held Monday – Thursday from 8 AM to 5 PM.

Space is limited.
