Coast Guard suspends search for missing swimmer

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coast Guard suspended the search Saturday evening for an 18-year-old man who was last seen swimming between Packery Channel and Bob Hall Pier near Corpus Christi, Texas.

The search began Thursday when Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi watchstanders received a report of three persons in the water, two males and one female, swimming 75 yards offshore when the male and female lost sight of the other male.

Coast Guard crews searched 1,820 square-nautical miles over the span of approximately 48 hours.

“Suspending a search without finding the loved one missing is a tough decision to make,” said Lt. Cmdr. Ariel Berrios, search and rescue mission coordinator. “We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of this young man.”

The Coast Guard’s search will remain suspended pending the development of new information.
