Mom of Navy vet held in Iran worried her son won’t survive

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The mother of a U.S. Navy veteran who has been held in Iran since July says she’s worried her son who was undergoing cancer treatment will not survive the detainment.

Joanne White issued the statement through a family spokesman Friday. Spokesman Jonathan Franks says 46-year-old Michael White went to Iran to visit his girlfriend, whom he had met online.

His mother doesn’t know why he was detained and has been unable to communicate with him.

She says her son worked as a cook for the Navy and left the service about a decade ago. She says he’s not a spy. He recently worked as a janitor.

White says that besides cancer, he has other medical issues and should be released so he can get help.
