A 43-year-old Houston mother accused of killing her 5-year-old son Friday after the child allegedly was drowned and decapitated is due in court Monday to answer charges on the grisly crime.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Lithiu Liu has been charged with capital murder and held without bail following a Saturday night court appearance.

Inside the home, officers found the slain child on the garage floor, headless and partially covered by a plastic bag – right where the boy’s father had found him when he came home from work, the Chronicle reports.

The father told police he’d left his wife home that morning with their 5-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter. When he returned, he found his wife in the garage, saying she’d sent the boy away.

His father started looking for him – and then Liu admitted the child was in the trash can, police said.

He opened the trash can to find his son’s body wrapped in a black plastic bag. The severed head was in the same trash can.

Police later found a bloody knife in the bathroom and a blood-spattered bathtub. Under questioning, Liu allegedly admitted to drowning her boy, but refused to talk about the decapitation.

Later, Liu was arrested and taken to jail. She apparently does not have any prior criminal history in Harris County.

Child Protective Services told the Chronicle  they’d interacted with the family back in 2015, though the children were never in state custody. It’s not clear why CPS was involved with the west Houston family to begin with, or how that involvement ended.
