A boot display outside Island Presbyterian Church is raising awareness for PTSD.

It coincides with PTSD Awareness Month, which is June.

The display is by the nonprofit, Coastal Bend Troop Support.

It consists of 23 boots, which represent the 22 veterans and one active duty member, that commit suicide every day.

The goal of the memorial is to eliminate negative stigmas and encourage people to seek help.

Organizers say one lady even brought a picture of her nephew and placed it on a boot.

"You’ll see them out here, they’ll come out and whether it’s their loved one or not, they’ll come down and just kneel down by the boot," says Navy veteran Gary Balluck.

The display will be outside the church until the end of the month.

They encourage service members and families whose loved ones are overseas to walk in, ask questions, and they’ll direct them to help.
