Tuesday morning, Mary Sherwood, PhD, was appointed by the Del Mar College Board of Regents to fill the District 4 seat vacated in May by the resignation of former Regent Guy L. Watts. Dr. Sherwood, one of three candidates who were interviewed for the position, was sworn in immediately after the selection.
In August 2017, Sherwood retired from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi after almost 12 years as chief of staff to the president. She served the Texas A&M University System a total of 27 years, beginning at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
At Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Sherwood was responsible for tracking higher education policy at the state and national level. She also participated in development of the university Legislative Appropriation Request, tracked proposed legislation affecting higher education and interfaced with the local legislative delegation.
At Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Sherwood focused on public affairs as well as strategic planning and development of materials supporting reaffirmation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). This experience led to her recruitment by the president’s office at Texas A&M University to assist in development of their Vision 2020 Strategic Plan.
After completing her doctorate in 2001, Sherwood continued working at the A&M System Office of Academic Affairs. Her responsibilities included reviewing academic program proposals from System institutions for feasibility, as well as compliance with Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and SACSCOC requirements.
Sherwood was a resident of Corpus Christi from 1982 to 1996, when she moved to College Station to complete her doctorate in higher education administration. She returned 12 years ago and has been a resident of District 4 since then.
“I wholeheartedly believe in and support the community college mission of providing educational access and opportunity,” Sherwood said. “Del Mar College has long been a strong provider of the educational access and success that underpin economic and social well-being in our community.”
