The U.S. Postal Service says they will not extend hours in southern and western parts of Texas on tax deadline day according to a press release.

IRS tax filing deadline is midnight on Tuesday, April 17 and according to the press release the main post office in Corpus Christi not extend hours like years before.

Area management says there’s not enough demand to require the extended hours because of electronic filing.

"With more people filing income tax returns electronically, the post pffice has seen a significant decline in mail volume from last minute tax filers," said Steven Hernandez, District Manager, "With the increasing decline in customer demand, with the exception of a few late night mail collection locations at our regional mail processing plants, we will not be extending hours for April 18 Tax Day operations.

Post offices in Austin, El Paso, McAllen, Midland, and San Antonio will not extend hours as well.  That affects anyone with Zip codes beginning with 765-767, 779-789, 797-799.

The post office says mail dropped off at the listed collection boxes before 11:59 p.m. will receive the timely postmark which is April 17.

Austin General Mail Facility (GMF), 8225 Cross Park Dr., Austin, TX 78710
Corpus Christi General Mail Facility (GMF), 809 Nueces Bay Blvd., Corpus Christi, TX 78469
El Paso General Mail Facility (GMF), 8401 Boeing Dr., El Paso, TX 79910
McAllen General Mail Facility (GMF), 620 E Pecan Blvd., McAllen, TX 78501
Midland General Mail Facility (GMF), 10000 Loop 40, Midland, TX 79711
San Antonio General Mail Facility (GMF), 10410 Perrin Beital Rd., San Antonio, TX 78284

Be sure to check pick up times for other mail boxes.  Dropping off mail at boxes after collection times causes your mail to be postmarked the following day

Because the IRS does not accept postage due mail, Hernandez says use correct postage.  First class postage for a letter starts a 50 cents and 21 cents for each additional ounce.
