Authorities in Texas have released the names of one police officer who died and two others who were wounded after a gunman “ambushed” them.

The suspected shooter, 46-year-old Alfredo Perez Delacruz, ambushed them with a rifle at an apartment complex in San Marcos, Texas.

"Our family in blue is mourning the loss of our fallen brother, Officer Justin R. Putnam, who was killed in the line of duty last evening," said San Marcos Police Department in a post.

San Marcos Police Department released photos of the officers Sunday morning with a message to the public.

"Officer Putnam was with SMPD for more than five years," officers posted, "Words can never adequately express our profound sorrow for Officer Putnam's family and loved ones. To say he will be missed is an understatement."

Officer Franco Stewart and Officer Justin Mueller were wounded in the altercation and transported to a hospital and are said to be in critical but stable condition following surgeries.

"We respectfully ask that all three families are given time to grieve and deal with their situations in private but we thank the community for the overwhelming outpouring of love and support," said their post.

The city said in a statement that the suspected shooter died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
